  • About Artist
My work is about unlocking memories that linger between various planes of reality.  The title "safar" refers to this notion of traveling between these states of consciousness within both time and space.

The paintings are playful anecdotes which question my relationship to cultural stereotypes. They are open-ended narratives that question todays place for a utopia within contemporary Iran.

Although the mirrors work on a different level, they too are an investigation into this notion of unlocking memories.  Iran is a country full of veiled truths which are only partially revealed.  As a visual artist I can only see half the truth and as I story teller I am only allowed to tell half the story.

The installation aspect of this show is meant to reference times of colonialism.  As a means of claiming ownership, imperial powers would collect and display objects acquired from exotic lands.  This practice helped them understand (or look as though they understood) all that was unfamiliar.  With this installation I am claiming ownership of my own hereditary connection to Iran and its place within my artistic practice.
